Al Jazeera English was named ‘Broadcaster of the Year’ at the 2022 New York Festivals TV & Film Awards for the sixth consecutive year.
The Al Jazeera Media Network collected an impressive array of gold, silver and bronze medals for its news and programmes coverage.
The ‘Broadcaster of the Year’ award, considered the premier prize by the organisers, goes to the media organisation that wins the highest number of gold medals.
The awards featured entries from over 50 countries, covering content screened on U.S and international broadcasters including ITV, BBC, NBC and CBC.
The winners were announced online on April 26th – this year’s ceremony being virtual due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Al Jazeera English won 15 gold medals. The channel won gold medals for its news coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict in May 2021 and the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan three months later.
Two gold medals went to AJE’s TV-digital series ‘All Hail the Lockdown’. Spearheaded by producer and presenter Ali Rae, the five-part series explores the social, economic and psychological effects of the global response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The documentary strand ‘The Big Picture’, which looks in depth into the pressing issues of our time, was awarded three gold medals for episodes focusing on issues of social justice in the USA during the 2020 election year and on how Covid-19 exposed long-standing racial tensions in the UK.
Other gold medals went to episodes from the Fault Lines, 101 East and Witness documentary strands and to the news analysis show The Listening Post, as well as to episodes from the Generation Change and Africa Direct series.
The channel also won 12 silver and 18 bronze medals.
