Al Jazeera wins Online Journalism Awards
In a year marked by overlapping crises and pandemic lockdowns, two Al Jazeera Digital teams have emerged with top prizes in the 2020 Online Journalism (OJA) Awards.
The full roster of winners was published on October 17, following a two-week online journalism innovation forum, ONA20 Everywhere, hosted by the Online News Association (ONA).
AJ+ wins an Edward R. Murrow Award
AJ+ won the 2020 National Edward R. Murrow Award in the category of Excellence in Social Media for its story “The US Navy's Toxic Playground: Vieques, Puerto Rico”, an episode of the multi-awarded show Direct From. The video shows how the island that was used by the U.S. Navy as a training ground for war for 60 years is today a toxic Superfund site because the Navy is still cleaning up their leftover bombs by literally exploding them.

Al Jazeera English’s 101 East documentary strand was named a Gold Winner at the Venice TV Awards in the category of ‘Cross-Platform Programming’ for its interactive report, “The $5 Forests”.

Still Here by AJ Contrast wins Kaleidoscope award
AJ Contrast’s immersive multimedia experience, Still Here, won a prestigious Digital Project of the Year in the RTDNA Kaleidoscope Awards on Sept. 8, marking the fourth award for the project since its premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in February.
