AJ+ won the Silver AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award in the category of Spot News/Feature Reporting for its story “The Bizarre COVID Side Effect No One Is Talking About”. The award is one of the most prestigious in science journalism worldwide. The video shows how a subset of COVID survivors are suffering from an unexpected side effect known as parosmia, a condition that causes their sense of smell to go haywire with no end in sight.

“We are incredibly honored to have received the prestigious AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Silver Award for an episode of Eat This with Yara, a food journalism program that was launched on AJ+ English in 2018. This award highlights the real-world impact of Al Jazeera’s continued investment in journalism and is but one of many important AJ+ contributions to not only the English-language media world, but also to the field of science”, said host and producer Yara Elmjouie.

Since their inception in 1945, the AAAS Kavil Science Journalism Awards have honored distinguished reporting on science by professional journalists for a general audience. The program, administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and endowed by The Kavli Foundation, is open to journalists worldwide. It’s 2022 edition drew entries from a record 62 countries this year. Winners included journalists in India, China, Australia, South Korea, Germany, and the United Kingdom
