Al Jazeera Media Network has won more than 140 Telly awards in the field of television and video, including 25 Gold awards in various media fields, awarding the Network "Company of the Year" at the 42nd annual session, and becoming the first non-U.S. media organisation to win the title since the award was established in 1979.
This year's awards featured Al Jazeera Arabic Channel winning more than 60 Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in different categories. The Organising Committee of the Telly Awards praised the artistic and creative levels of a number of the Channel’s programmes, series and documentaries, including “About Cinema” series,"Women’s Voices", "The Traveler", "Ma Khafia Azam" and "Rest of the Story".
In the news industry, the Channel's coverage of the U.S. election has won a number of awards, and the Channel’s reports have won other awards, including several for an Augmented Reality report on Coronavirus transmission and its origin.
In terms of programmes, "Rest of the Story" won five Gold awards, "The Traveler" won three Gold awards, "Women’s Voices" won two Gold awards, and “About Cinema” series won two Gold awards.
Al Jazeera Digital also scooped 40 awards – 3 Gold, 22 Silver and 15 Bronze – for its diverse video product in English and Arabic. Winners included video explainers, short documentaries, virtual reality (VR) documentaries and news and current affairs explainers.
The Investigation Unit won twenty-three awards, including five Gold awards; the Creative directorate won a range of awards including three Gold awards; and both Al Jazeera English and AJ+ won awards in many categories.
Dr. Mostefa Souag, Acting Director General of Al Jazeera Media Network, said "Al Jazeera's numerous award wins, including the 2021 Telly Award for “Company of the Year”, represents a new testament to the excellent content produced by our various platforms and channels. These awards reflect well upon the Network's leadership and the ability to keep pace with media development in all its various fields and to outperform prestigious international channels and production companies. I hope this success will drive us to provide more outstanding production, including documentaries and programmes."
Sabrina Dridje, Telly Awards Executive Director, gave a word to the winners, saying: “In the face of a year like no other, the visual storytelling community has continued to defy the limitations of our new world. Achievements have been both societal, such as embracing social media platforms to raise awareness about injustices and promote solidarity for movements, as well as geographical, like developing fully remote pipelines for dispersed teams.”
The Telly Awards are ranked among the most important awards specialized in evaluating video content and visual production prepared for broadcast on television and across various broadcast platforms. This year, its jury included more than 200 experts from international media organisations, channels and production companies.
In addition to Al Jazeera, the list of award winners included a number of well-known channels, media organisations and companies, including Netflix, CBS, HBO, BBC Global, Disney, Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, PlayStation, among others.
