“Al Jazeera has been a loud voice in favor of press freedom and a transformative force on the global journalism scene”: The International Press Institute (IPI)

Doha - Al Jazeera Media Network was awarded the International Press Institute (IPI) 2018 Chairman’s Award. The award - given at the discretion of the chair with advice of the Executive Director and other stakeholders- was presented on June 22, 2018, during the IPI 68th World Congress held in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Award honors individuals and organizations that fight against great odds to ensure freer and more independent media in their country or region. The award was received by Dr. Mostefa Souag, Acting Director General of the Al Jazeera Media Network. In attendance were some of the world’s foremost journalists, key leaders in media, as well as Lai Mohammed Nigeria’s Minister of Information. The International Press Institute (IPI) based in Vienna, stated that “Al Jazeera has been a loud voice in favor of press freedom and a transformative force on the global journalism scene since its founding 22 years ago. It continues to provide exceptional journalism despite a major effort by some in the past year to shut down the network.”

The International Press Institute was founded in 1950; and has over 60,000 journalists and media organizations in over 100 countries. The award is made annually at IPI’s World Congress.
