Rob McElwee joined a small team of expert meteorologists at Al Jazeera English in 2014, who cover the whole world in line with Al Jazeera’s news coverage. Often weather stories become news stories, which is useful to inform a wider audience of the current climate change. Background in broadcast meteorology, Rob worked with the BBC in London for 20 years as a local, then national, then international weatherman. He trained as a forecaster within the UK Met Office and served for a short term on military airfields. Rob says having 40 years of weather experience in his head is helpful in spotting changing trends in areas, places where Al Jazeera covers events as they happen, but where data is hard to come by. Al Jazeera weather output continued daily output from a dedicated green screen studio through the COVID-19 pandemic.
