The reopening of Al Jazeera's Khartoum bureau proves the importance of its role

More than two months after the closure of Al Jazeera Media Network’s office in Khartoum, the Sudanese authorities reopened it on Friday.

While valuing this step, Al Jazeera asserts that as a professional news media outlet it has always placed people at the centre of its coverage and made different platforms available to them to express their opinions.

For the past two decades, Al Jazeera has comprehensively covered developments in Sudan via all its platforms, witnessing the important transition in the country while aligning its coverage with the people and their aspirations.

The reopening of Al Jazeera’s bureau in Sudan is further testament to the network’s professionalism. It is a right given by international law for journalists and media outlets to carry out their role. In this regard, we hope that the Sudanese authority’s decision to reopen the bureau rings in a new phase in the country’s stance towards media freedom and the protection of journalists.

Al Jazeera Media Network thanks its viewers, especially the Sudanese people and international human rights organisations, who have advocated the reopening of the bureau, and appreciates the political leaders who supported the network and contributed towards its coverage during its closure.
